At 5:02 pm on Monday, August 30 the Statesboro and Bulloch Fire departments responded to a fire at The George apartment complex located at 100 Woodland Drive. A maintenance worker in the complex noticed smoke coming from a downstairs apartment in building 11 and called 911.

Statesboro Police Officers and the first engines on the scene confirmed heavy smoke coming from the apartment. The firefighters requested additional firefighters and equipment to battle the blaze.

"Thanks to a quick action of the maintenance person, a rapid response and aggressive attack of the fire by firefighters, it was contained to one apartment in the complex," said Tim Grams, Statesboro Fire Chief. "The firefighters were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area."

According to Chief Grams the occupants of the apartment where the fire originated, nor the apartment above it, were home at the time of the fire.

He confirmed that there was heavy smoke and water damage to the bottom apartment and smoke damage to the apartment above.

Residents of both apartments have been displaced temporarily.

Statesboro Fire Department will perform a routine cause and origin investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

There were no injuries reported.
