EGSC Announces November 2020 Student of the Month

East Georgia State College recently announced the launch of a Student of the Month Program.

The program gives faculty and staff at EGSC the opportunity to nominate students based on one or more of the following criteria: commitment to academic growth, engagement in the college community, and contribution to an inclusive and supportive environment. Three students are selected to represent EGSC’s campuses and online degree programs each month. Each student selected will receive a certificate signed by the EGSC President and goodie bag. Additionally, video interviews will be on EGSC’s social media platforms.

Tionna Young attends EGSC’s Swainsboro campus and is from Midville, Georgia.

Fall 2020 was her first semester at EGSC. She chose to attend the college because of its size, and it suited her personality. Young’s favorite class is English 1102 with Dr. Alan Brasher. The class motivates her to participate more among her classmates than any class she has taken before. The class even inspired her to change her major to communication arts. After graduating from EGSC, Young plans to attend Georgia Southern University or Valdosta State University to pursue a degree in journalism.

Okechukwu Iwuji was the student selected from EGSC’s August campus.

Iwuji, born in Nigeria but moved to the United States with his parents at a young age, currently lives in Augusta and chose EGSC to be close to home. His favorite thing about EGSC is the relationships between students and professors. After graduation, he plans to attend Augusta University to pursue a degree in physical therapy.

Calynn Kirkland, the Statesboro campus student of the month, is from Baxley, Georgia.

Kirkland said she chose EGSC because she has test anxiety. The smaller classes help her manager her anxiety and succeed in her classes. During her time at EGSC she has had many professors encourage her but two of them have had a big impact on her life.  Professor Jason Lee and Professor Darlene Dickens have both played an important role in her college career and she is thankful for them. After graduating from EGSC, Kirkland plans to attend Georgia Southern University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in special education.

The EGSC Student of the Month Program personalizes the student experience and cultivates a positive school culture where students feel valued. The awards present an opportunity for the college community to demonstrate EGSC values through an investment in the success of students with diverse backgrounds, strengths, and interests.  The EGSC Student of the Month Award recognizes students who represent excellence within the EGSC community. Selection of students is based on commitment to academic growth, engagement in the college community, and contribution to an inclusive and supportive academic environment.  Up to three awards are selected each month: the goal is to represent the range of students enrolled across the college’s campuses and online programs. Potential awardees may be submitted by faculty and staff.

Congratulations to the EGSC November Students of the Month!
