Statesboro and Bulloch County Fire Departments responded around 9 PM Saturday night to a structure fire at Lewis & Sons, 410 Martin Luther King Drive in downtown Statesboro. When firefighters arrived, the auto repair business was fully engulfed in flames visible above the roof of the metal structure building.

Firefighters quickly got the fire under control, but not before the downtown Statesboro business and its contents suffered significant fire damage. Nearby houses were temporarily evacuated, but there was no damage to any other structures.

According to Statesboro Fire Chief, Tim Grams, the cause of the fire is not known at this time. They will be conducting their standard cause and origin investigation.

It was founded by the late Woodward and Mattie Mae Lewis, which was no relation to Alethia and Charlie Lewis. It is currently owned by Cassius Houston, the grandson of the late Woodward and Mattie Mae Lewis.

The story originally attributed Alethia and Charlie Lewis as the founders.
