Dr. Amy Dorminey, Ogeechee Technical College’s 2020 Rick Perkins Award winner, finished as a regional finalist in the state GOAL competition on Wednesday, September 30.

“It was truly an honor to represent Ogeechee Tech in the competition this year,” said Dorminey. “If I could go back and do it again I would not change a thing. I’ve really enjoyed working with everyone and being a spokesperson for the incredible opportunities that technical education provides our local communities.”

Dorminey was among nine finalists that competed for the top prize in the statewide TCSG competition back in September, her long journey into teaching in the Technical College System of Georgia is one that she is proud of.

“I worked in private practice as an associate veterinarian for several years and while I was working as a small animal veterinarian I received a phone call from a friend that told me OTC was hiring,” explained Dorminey. “An experience I had with one of my kennel assistants opened my eyes to my love for teaching. Now I am allowed to merge the two things I am most passionate about – veterinary medicine and teaching into one career, and for that I am forever grateful.”

Dorminey, has been an instructor at the College since fall of 2014 and it came as no surprise to Dr. Foley, Executive VP for Academic and Student Affairs, that the judges saw the same qualities in her that he has.

“It is no surprise to me that Dr. Amy Dorminey was chosen as a state finalist for the Rick Perkins Award. She embodies the true meaning of the award by focusing on academic excellence and personal achievement. She challenges her students to be the best Veterinary Technicians they can be. Her passion for her students and her career is evident in everything she does,” said Foley.

Dr. Dorminey will continue to represent Ogeechee Technical College as a Rick Perkins Award winner by partnering with the OTC Foundation to share the story of technical education to the local community.
