Bulloch County COVID-19 Report 070920

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) daily status report is now reporting only two total critical care beds are available in our Regional Coordinating Hospital District, which includes Savannah and Brunswick hospitals.  Critical care bed capacity has decreased by 18 in one day.  The statewide total of critical care beds dropped by 34 bringing the total available to only 474.

Statesboro’s EGRMC has 24 ICU beds and 17 vents currently.  They have 18 COVID-19 patients admitted and 5 COVID-19 patients currently on vents.

“Our entire region has been tight for ICU beds the past few days.  The good news is that the number of ventilators needed has been lower”, said Stephen Pennington, EGRMC CEO.  “However the number of COVID-19 patients has been very high.  Citizens are NOT taking this seriously until someone close to them gets COVID-19.”

Exceeding EGRMC bed and staff capacity is why Pennigton continues to pleading for citizens to wear a mask, social distance, wash hands and avoid crowds to slow the spread and not overwhelm our hospital.

LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES REQUESTING HELP

Bulloch County Public Safety Director, Ted Wynn is working on resource request from local long-term care facilities (LTC) for staffing support.  Five facilities are reporting 22 staff members who are positive for COVID-19.  In normal circumstances, it is difficult to adequately staff LTC facilities.  It is also common for health care workers to work at multiple facilities.  COVID-19 restrictions have prevented many of the LTC facilities to share staff.

Heritage Inn and Rehabilitation is reporting 11 COVID-19 positive staff members.  They are also reporting 15 patients positive with COVID-19 and today their total deaths from COVID-19 increased to two.  COVID-19 has been tremendously difficult for nursing homes.  Heritage along with all of the local LTC facilities have received assistance from the Georgia National Guard with cleaning their facilities.  The increase in positives in these facilities adds to leaders concerns about the seriousness of COVID-19 impact on our community.
