GS women's softball: Chanticleers blank Eagles, 5-0, on Sunday

Coastal Carolina took a Sun Belt Conference series sweep from visiting Georgia Southern with a 5-0 win on Sunday at St. John Stadium in Conway.

The Chanticleers improved to 28-9 and 5-4 SBC with the victory, while Georgia Southern falls to 11-20 overall and 1-8 in the league. The Eagles return home for the first time in two weeks, hosting App State in the first of a three-game Sun Belt series on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Coastal Carolina struck first in the contest, getting a two-run double from Iyanla DeJesus in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third on an Emma Davis single, a walk to Dejah Mills and a hit by pitch by Janai Conklin, but the Chants were able to turn a 5-2-3 double play to end the threat.

The Chants then got a solo home run in the third off the bat of Delaney Keith, then a two-run shot fro Keirstin Roose in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 5-0.

That was more than enough for Nicolette Picone (7-2), who hurled 4 2/3 innings of four-hit shutout relief, striking out three for the victory. Bailey Holland (3-11) took the loss for the Eagles in the circle, giving up four hits and three runs in three innings of work, striking out one.

Davis led the Eagles offensively by going 4-for-4, the second four-hit game of the season for the freshman.
