Game Preview: Eagles set for primetime matchup with Coastal

The Georgia Southern football team opens up Sun Belt Conference play in primetime on Saturday, hosting Coastal Carolina at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:03 p.m. and will be broadcast on NFL Network. The game will also be available via radio on the Georgia Southern Sports Network. Here's all you need to know about the game:

  • This will be the 10th football meeting between Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina in a series that dates back to 2006. The Eagles lead the series 5-4 after Coastal came back to win 34-30 last season in Conway.
  • The Chants have won the past three games against GS played, including  28-8 win in Statesboro in 2021, the last time the two teams played at Paulson Stadium.
  • In 2007, Georgia Southern went to Brooks Stadium and came away with a 42-34 win behind a combined 459 yards rushing from Jayson Foster (253 yards, school-record 6 TDs) and Lamar Lewis (206 yards). 
  • The Eagles are 67-28 against teams from the Palmetto State and have seven players from South Carolina, including starting tight end Jjay Mcafee, who hails from Charleston.
  • Clay Helton is 4-3 in conference openers, 0-1 at GS.

10: In three of the four games thus far this season, 10 or more receivers have caught at least one pass in the game, including a school-record 12 at Wisconsin.

9: Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina have met nine previous times with the Eagles leading 5-4. Coastal has won the past three contests, including a 28-8 in 2021 in Statesboro and 34-30 last year in Conway.

8: Michael Lantz made four field goals as Ball State and is now 8 for 9 on field goals this season.

7: Quarterback Davis Brin is ranked seventh in the FBS in passing yards with 1,289 yards, but is fifth in yards per game at 322.2 yards per game. He is also second in the country in attempts (181) and completions (132).

6: Jayson Foster scored a school-record six rushing touchdowns in the 2007 win at Coastal Carolina.

5: Khaleb Hood recorded his fifth career 100-yard receiving game at Ball State last week, tying the school record set by Raja Andrews.

4: Four Eagle players­—Dalen Cobb (#77), Khaleb Hood (#80), OJ Arnold (#152), Derwin Burgess Jr. (#170)—are all ranked in the Top 200 in the FBS in all-purpose yards per game.

3: Redshirt freshman defensive back Elijah Hynes graduated from high school in 2019 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for nearly three years. Saturday is Salute to Service Day at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.

2: This is the second game on the Eagles' schedule against a team from the Palmetto State. Georgia Southern dispatched of The Citadel 34-0 in the season opener.

1: This will be Georgia Southern's first game on the NFL Network.
