A look ahead at the 2024-25 Softball Season in Bulloch County

Statesboro High’s softball team is led by coach Karry Parker. This is Parker’s second time coaching the Lady Devils’ softball team. She recently coached for Statesboro’s Volleyball team, but is returning to the diamond this season. 

SHS finished with a 15-10-1 record last season while having an 8-2 record in region play. The Lady Devils were eliminated in the fifth game of the 2023 GHSA Class 5A Position E Super Regionals.

Players to Watch For: Seniors Terrece Gibson, Megan Hiers, Kate Yawn

Coach Parker spoke on the importance of these three players for this upcoming season. “I am relying on our three seniors to lead by example and demonstrate mature leadership on and off the field,” Parker said. “I’m excited to see all 19 players learn and improve.”

Southeast Bulloch is coached by Aimee Civallier. SEB in a new region this year, which should prove to be a different challenge for the team.

“We are in a new region this year and a different playoff format, so it should help us stay focused and motivated,” Civallier said.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off of a 16-9-1 season in the 2023-24 season. They finished with a 6-2 record in region play. Their season ended in the final game of the 2023 GHSA Class 4A Position D Super Regionals with a loss to Whitewater High School.

Players to Watch for: Seniors Meghan Newman, Paisley Nordeoff, and Madison Oliff

The three seniors are the only remaining players from the SEB team that made the Elite 8 a few years ago. There are also 4 returning juniors who started last season.

Coach Civallier spoke on what she expects from her team. “Our expectation every year is for our players to practice and perform to the best of their ability to compete for a Region Championship and make it to the State Tournament,” Civallier said. 


Bulloch Academy

The Bulloch Academy Gators are coached by Ashley Burke. The Lady Gators finished with a 12-9 record in the 2023-24 season. Bulloch Academy would win 7 of their last 8 games. Coach Burke believes that the final stretch of last season is going to be big when it comes to the team’s development for this season.

“It gave the girls an idea of what it takes to win games and stay focused,” Burke said. 

Bulloch Academy lost in the play-in of the 2023 GIAA Class AAA Softball Super Regional.

Coach Burke believes that the only sophomore on the team will be a key factor in many things on the field. 

“I am excited as a coach for every player on my team to see them grow throughout the season,” Burke said. Burke also feels some bittersweetness watching this year’s senior class. She started her coaching career at Bulloch Academy when the seniors were in 8th grade. 


Portal High School

Travis Motes leads the Lady Panthers as their head coach. The Lady Panthers struggled last season and finished with a 4-19 record. Coach Motes saw something beyond the win-loss record.

“What I saw was a team that was not as experienced or mature as the others we have had,” Motes said. “We got better over the course of the year, but it wasn’t enough as we would have liked it to be.”

Despite the youth on this year’s team, coach Motes wants to see his team compete.

Good Isn’t Good Enough,” Motes said. “Just being good is not what we are striving for. We want to be better, better than we were yesterday, better at the end of practice than we were at the beginning of practice. We are going to surprise some people this year. We are not the same team we were last year.”
