On Sunday, December 15th, members of the community gathered at Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro to honor veterans as part of the Wreaths Across America initiative. This event, spearheaded by American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90, brought together various local organizations to pay tribute to those who served.
Originally, the Civil Air Patrol, the group responsible for placing wreaths at Eastside Cemetery, had only 35 wreaths.
However, thanks to the generosity of the VFW Post in Screven County and the Screven County History Buffs, an additional 300 wreaths were made available, bringing the total to 360 wreaths.
Before heading to Eastside Cemetery, American Legion Post 90 placed 55 wreaths at AC Dunlap Cemetery. Commander Bobby Godwin of Post 90 emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices of veterans, saying, "This is a great opportunity to recognize and respect those who have served our community."
The event drew participation from organizations such as Boy Scout Troop 935, Trail Life, American Heritage Girls, and Cub Scouts Pack 935 from Pittman Park Methodist Church.
Josh Hicks, a volunteer, shared his personal connection: “My grandpa served as a sniper in Vietnam. He passed away in 2010, and while he’s buried in Emanuel County, I think it’s important to recognize veterans’ graves and honor their sacrifices.”
Wreaths Across America allows individuals to sponsor wreaths for $17 each. Joellen Flannery, the coordinator, ensures all sponsored wreaths are delivered for placement. This year marks the second time the initiative has taken place locally, and organizers are proud to expand it within Statesboro’s city limits.
Through community efforts and heartfelt participation, Statesboro continues to honor its veterans, reflecting the values and freedoms they fought to protect.
