This holiday season, celebrate the arts with the Averitt Center

The Averitt Center for the Arts has something for everyone this December! You can look forward to holiday music, laughter, gift-shopping, and, as usual, plenty of chances to express yourself through the arts!

December 8: Paint N Party

The next Paint-N-Party will be held December 8th at 6pm. No experience necessary! Just come and have fun with friends and your favorite drink! This month the Center will be painting a beautiful bright red cardinal. The cost to attend these events is $40 each and includes all the supplies needed. The Paint-N-Parties are held at the Roxy Remley Center at 31 E. Vine St. and are catered and sponsored by BOROTAKEOUT.

December 8: Chamber Orchestra

The Statesboro Chamber Orchestra, along with singers from throughout Bulloch County, will perform pieces from Handel’s Messiah on Friday, December 8th at 7:30 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater (33 E. December 9: Give It a Spin

Interested in pottery but feeling shy about signing up for a class? Come on down to the Roxie studio (31 E. Vine St.) and try our Give it a Spin! workshops on December 9th at either 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. This 2.5-hour session will cover the basics of throwing on the potters’ wheel. All tools and materials provided. The cost is $40. Give it a Spin! is for ages 16 plus.

December 9: Santa & Cookies Workshop

Also on December 9th, we will host a workshop called Santa & Cookies from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This workshop will supply holiday fun for the kids as they decorate home-baked gingerbread cookies. Hot chocolate with marshmallows will be served and a special treat will be given by Santa. This cost is just $50. This event is for children ages 4-11.

Now through January 5: Bunyan Morris Exhibition

Bunyan Morris’ gallery exhibition will be on display through January 5th in our Main Gallery (33 E. Main St.). Morris’ work in abstract design and his method of spontaneous creation by painting in the moment is inspired by the works of Surrealists and Abstract Expressionists such as Juan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee. Morris says, “Art created by these artists along with works by Jean-Michael Basquiat and Julian Schnabel plays a large role in the development and execution of my aesthetic vision.”

He considers himself a multi-media artist. However, gouache, color pencil and color ink are Morris’ media of focus. Many of the creations are designed to be hung in any visual orientation. With his works, there is often no single right side up. In Morris’ paintings, one can immerse themselves in a universe of fantastical subaquatic creatures, colorful geometric forms, and celestial imagery.

Our Main Gallery is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday and is sponsored by Drs. Patrick & Theresa Novotny, Burney Marsh & John Tucker, Lawrence & Kathleen Smith, Statesboro Regional Art Association, Judy Butler, Tony & Diane Phillips, Bill & Virginia Anne Franklin Waters and Frazier’s Flowers. Thanks to our generous sponsors, all our galleries are free to the public.

The Averitt Center for the Arts will be closed for Christmas on December 16th- January 1st.
