Interstate 516 (I-516) eastbound to I-16 westbound ramp (Exit 5) Closure
The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will implement a continuous closure of the Interstate 516 (I-516) eastbound to I-16 westbound ramp (Exit 5). The I-516 eastbound to I-16 eastbound ramp portion of Exit 5 will remain open. This 12-day closure is being implemented to rebuild the I-516 eastbound to I-16 westbound ramp more efficiently, which would otherwise require multiple weekend-long closures. This closure also allows for an upcoming traffic shift of I-16 westbound onto the newly completed portion of the overpasses over Tremont Road and Bunger Pit Road.
The detour will be in place starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 10, 2023, and continuing until 5 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. During this time, motorists traveling on I-516 eastbound should take the exit for US 17/US 80/Ogeechee Road (Exit 3), turn left off the ramp, then turn left to access I-516 westbound to I-16 westbound.
Work is ongoing throughout this interchange to reconstruct seven bridges at the I-16/I-516 Interchange. Various traffic shifts are anticipated into 2024 throughout the project limits. Motorists are advised to drive carefully through the work zones.
Above: I-516 eastbound to I-16 westbound detour map during continuous closure The 16@95 Improvement Projects will reconstruct and provide infrastructure enhancements to the I-16 at I-95 Interchange and widen along the I-16 corridor from I-95 to I-516. The projects are intended to ease congestion, decrease travel times, and increase safety and operational efficiencies for passenger and freight vehicles.
