Mark Anderson's nearly 15-year nursing career weaves a compelling narrative of rural resilience and a profound dedication to transforming primary care in Bulloch County. His journey, rooted in the serene landscapes of Screven County, between Sylvania and Newington, is a testament to the power of personalized healthcare.

"Growing up out there, you learn the value of community, of knowing your neighbors," Anderson reflects, a sentiment that shapes his approach to patient care. His education in this close-knit environment, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Georgia Southern University, provided a foundation for his multifaceted career.

Initially, Anderson worked as a chemist, but suffered a layoff. This situation drove him to assess his future career path, and the shifting economic tides ultimately steered him toward nursing.

"Nursing is a recession-proof industry, and it is a great opportunity to apply science in everyday life," he explains.

He enrolled in GSU's nursing program and worked in various clinical settings, including a crisis stabilization and ventilator units to school nursing and a pivotal period in home health, which revealed his true calling.

"I learned I had an affinity for one-on-one patient care in an exam-type setting," Anderson shares.

This passion drove him to earn a Master of Science in Nursing from South University and achieve dual board certifications as both a Family and Emergency Nurse Practitioner.

In December 2023, Anderson and Dr. Loy Cowart brought their vision to fruition with the establishment of Bulloch Family Practice, a locally-owned, nurse practitioner co-owned clinic that stands in stark contrast to the growing trend of corporate healthcare.

"We wanted to create a space where patients feel seen, heard, and truly cared for," Anderson emphasizes.

Central to Anderson's philosophy is a focus on primary care prevention and lifestyle medicine. He believes that true healthcare extends beyond treating symptoms to fostering holistic well-being.

"Lifestyle is ultimately key. I've seen plenty of good genetics undone by bad lifestyle," he states, underscoring the importance of proactive healthcare.

His personal journey, which saw him lose 150 pounds through diligent lifestyle changes, lends credibility to his advocacy.

"I've lived the 'too busy,' 'too tired' lifestyle," he admits. "There is only one way to live a healthy lifestyle: mindfully. If you are not willing to devote attention to your diet and put in the work to maintain your physical structures, you are going to have a bad outcome. There are no shortcuts, but setting small achievable goals starts adding up."

Anderson's approach to medication is equally pragmatic.

"The best medication you can take is only exactly what you need and how much of it you need," he believes, emphasizing a conservative approach. "I'm very much more if I can get you off of medicine, I will."

He recognizes that each patient is unique and that treatment plans must be tailored accordingly. He also believes in a collaborative approach, where the provider and the patient develop obtainable goals to keep the patient in optimal health.

"If I have someone come in the early stages of diabetes that doesn't necessarily require medication, lifestyle adjustment and monitoring can work," he explains.

Anderson practices what he preaches: commit to a healthy lifestyle.

Bulloch Family Practice seamlessly blends modern healthcare conveniences with a personal touch. Electronic health records and telehealth options enhance accessibility, while the clinic's welcoming atmosphere fosters a sense of trust and connection. With operational hours designed to accommodate diverse schedules, and a 24/7 telehealth service through their Previa Medical group partnership, patients can access care whenever they need it.

"Our focus is the interplay of quality and quantity of life," Anderson says of the practice.

His desire to help patients make positive, lasting changes in their health and wellness journey is Anderson's chief motivator.

"If you are looking for improvements, you're looking for some lifestyle coaching, that's what we can provide," he states.

In his free time, Anderson enjoys spending time at home in Pembroke with his wife of 12 years, Teresa, and their four dogs.

"We like the mountains, love the beach, take our motorcycles out for lazy rides along backroads and, anytime I get a chance, I'm up for jumping out of perfectly good airplanes," Anderson says.

For those seeking a healthcare provider who prioritizes prevention, lifestyle medicine, and personalized care, Anderson offers a refreshing and effective approach to promoting optimal health. His philosophy is one of patient empowerment and guidance, not just patient treatment. It's an approach he has proven effective by overcoming his personal health struggles.

The combination of that knowledge with his medical expertise gives Anderson's patients a unique medical experience that is focused on prevention, vitality, and sustainable well-being.
