The Ogeechee Area Hospice (OAH) held its much-anticipated 17th Annual Community Chicken Dinner on November 1, 2024. This long-standing event, which has become a community staple, featured plates piled high with Captain Todd Hutchens’ famous barbecue chicken, green beans, corn on the cob, and cookies, all for $10 per plate. Proceeds went directly to support OAH, the region’s only nonprofit hospice, which provides essential care across nine counties.

Hosting this event is no small feat, with the Bulloch County Sheriff's Investigator Captain Todd Hutchens leading a team of volunteer cooks. The volunteers work through the night, grilling over 2,500 chickens to meet the community’s demand. This effort extends beyond just a meal—it’s a testament to the support OAH receives from Bulloch, Screven, Candler, Evans, and beyond. “They’re a huge help to us,” said Tinker Lanier, Donor Relations, Facility and Marketing Manager. “Todd just takes over, and we’re grateful for everyone involved.”

OAH’s recent accreditation has been a milestone achievement, underscoring the quality of care it provides. Lanier noted the importance of this recognition: “It’s an extra special boost for us, confirming that we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing—and doing it well.” OAH stands apart as the only nonprofit hospice in the region with an inpatient facility, offering essential services, including respite and residential care, for families needing additional support.

For those who missed the pre-order deadline, the day of the event offered a limited number of extra plates for last-minute visitors. Each year, the community response has been overwhelming, with some even surprised by how quickly the plates sell out. “If you missed out, be sure to mark your calendars for next year,” joked Lanier, adding a friendly reminder to follow OAH for updates on upcoming events.

The community’s connection to OAH continues beyond the Chicken Dinner. The annual “Mistletoe Memories” event, slated for December 3, will invite families to honor loved ones who have passed. This heartfelt occasion will feature a tree-lighting ceremony, ribbon tying, children’s activities, and a special visit from Santa Claus.
