The Statesboro Blue Devils are traveling to Tucker High School to face off against the Tigers in the first round of the GHSA State playoffs Friday, November 10, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
Friday morning, the Devils had a send off from the school to garner excitement from the community.
Students, faculty and parents showed up to send them off. SHS dad Benji Lewis provided Jamin inspiration along with words from SHS Athletic Director Liz Driggers. The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit and SPD officers provided them a VIP police escort out of the city.
The Blue Devils are led by first year coach, Matt Dobson.
“This is my first year here,” Dobson said. “That senior class is always a unique group and they’ve bought into what we're trying to do.”
He is very proud of the team he's had this season, especially after having a tough schedule and season.
“This season has been full of ups and downs and lots of injuries,” said Dobson. “But our guys have battled and I’m so proud of the toughness they’ve shown to get here where we’re at.”
Some of the main focuses for tonight's game against the Tigers are to just continue with things they did in last week's game against Jenkins. They want to win special teams, create turnovers on defense and hold on to the ball offensively.
“It’s a cool experience for our kids to get to go on a long road trip and play,” coach Dobson said. “The playoffs is a great environment and so we’re excited for our kids to get that opportunity.”
According to Dobson, this team has been vigilant in living out the core values they talk about everyday: giving your best effort, showing love and toughness. He’s excited for them and the opportunity for them to handle business and continue playing football.
