Statesboro Blue Devils Split Wins on Senior Night

STATESBORO, Tuesday, March 26, 2024 – The Statesboro Blue Devils took on the Greenbrier Wolves for Senior Night 2024 at Womack Field. The Lady Blue Devils fell short losing fervently 9-0, and the Blue Devils won a tight-bout 1-0 fight to the end.

The Lady Blue Devils Didn’t Stand A Chance

The Lady Blue Devils were defeated by the Lady Wolves 9-0 in a shut-out. The Lady Blue Devils struggled to get the ball rolling focusing more on their defensive strategy than their offensive. That seemed to make them more tired and struggling to keep up with the Wolves in both halves of the match up.

Although the Lady Blue Devils (10-6,8-2) lost on senior night, they are ranked at the number two spot in the region behind the one-seeded Lady Wolves (12-0,10-0). Head coach Sarah Parker didn’t have much to say about the match, but she had a great deal of love shared by her first group of seniors.

“All of them are smart, beautiful, ambitious and opinionated women who are going to take on the world and do amazing things off the field and I can’t wait to see where they go,” said Coach Parker.

The Lady Blue Devil Seniors consisted of Lydia Lippincott, Nora Schroeder, Erin Wiggins, Bailey Bryson, Isabella Halaby, Eva Beth James and Demia Hartwell.

The Blue Devils Came Out On Top

The last time the Blue Devils took on the Wolves the Devils did not play to their full potential. They were sloppy on both sides of the ball and weren’t able to get their footing. Tuesday’s match was a completely different story.  The Blue Devils lost to the Wolves in the first match up 7-0. On senior night, the Blue Devils defeated the Wolves 1-0 in a close match up.

With only 14:30 minutes left in the scoreless match up between the third-seeded Blue Devils and the first-seeded Wolves, Brayden Bremby of the Blue Devils pulled the lucky lottery ticket scoring the first and only goal of the game off a corner kick by Kieth Howard to give the Blue Devils the lead that would end up being the final score giving the Wolves the ultimate upset of the season.

The Blue Devils (7-7-2,7-3) are now back in second place going into this final region match up. Statesboro’s shut-out defensive performance by seniors Benny Stansil, Gage Landing, James Ryall and goalkeeper Crieghton Horst helped to keep Greenbrier at bay.

Head coach Jared Simonin had a lot to say about his team’s performance from the first match up to this one.

“The game plan was just a higher work rate,” Simonin said. “In our 7-0 loss to them we did not play well at all, so it was just cleaning up the little things and doing what we needed to.”

The Blue Devils played better as a team and they were rewarded with an upset win over the one-seeded Greenbrier Wolves.
