Monarchs Surge Past Eagles in Thursday Night Action

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion jumped out to a 20-0 lead and never looked back in downing the Georgia Southern football squad, 47-19, in Thursday night Sun Belt action at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

After the two teams traded punts to start the game, the Monarchs got on the board with an 8-yard touchdown pass and then scored on the next drive to take a 13-0 lead with Elhadj Fallblocking the PAT. In the second quarter, the Monarchs scored quickly after an Eagle fumble to increase the lead to 20. The GS defense got its legs under it and forced a three-and-out and then JC French hit Josh Dallas on a 59-yard touchdown pass to get the Eagles on the board. ODU responded with a field goal to make it 23-7 late in the first half and then scored a touchdown with 46 seconds left to make it 30-7.

The Eagles got the ball to start the second half but committed a turnover on the second play that led to ODU's fifth touchdown of the game. Trailing 44-7, French hit Dalen Cobb on a flea flicker to score on a 55-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter and then Dexter Williams II hit OJ Arnold on a 4-yard pass with 5:34 left in the game to account for the final score.

French threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns while Cobb led the offense with seven catches for 95 yards and a score. Dallas had three grabs for 90 yards.

Up Next: The Eagles (5-3, 3-1) will head to Mobile to take on South Alabama (3-4, 2-1) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (ET)/6:30 p.m. (CT) in a Sun Belt game that will be broadcast on ESPNU.
