STATESBORO - Marshall women's basketball drilled 16 of 29 three-pointers en route to a 106-95 Sun Belt victory over host Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Herd (15-5, 9-0 SBC) remained unbeaten in league play this year with the win, while handing Georgia Southern (13-8, 3-6 SBC) its fifth loss in a row.
Marshall outscored the Eagles by a 28-19 margin in the first quarter, hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers in the outset. The Herd then connected on 7-of-11 threes in a 29-point second quarter to lead 57-42 at halftime.
The Eagles would close to single digits midway through the third quarter as Diamond Stokes' layup made the score 61-52 with 6:40 left in the period, but Marshall responded with a quick 7-0 run to increase the gap. Georgia Southern would not be able to close within single digits the rest of the way.
Terren Ward led a trio of Eagles in double figures on the day with 28 points to go with 11 rebounds, her 14th double-double of the year. Diamond Stokes and Simone James each added 16 points. Breanna Campbell's 29 points paced Marshall, while Abby Beeman added 28 points.
Eagle of the Game
Stokes finished the game 7-of-10 shooting from the field for her first double-digit scoring game of the season and just one shy of her career high of 17 points set last year. She added five rebounds as well.
Stats of the Game
Marshall's 16 three-pointers set a new Hanner Fieldhouse record for an opposing team, breaking the old record of 15 threes set by Arizona on November 11, 2011.
Quotables
Head coach Anita Howard on the game today against Marshall
"I thought that first quarter bit us in the butt a little bit. We were a little shell shocked. We didn't get back in transition or guard the three like we knew they would shoot it. I thought they shot lights out in the first half, in the second half we were able to contain them. I think they made 12 threes in the first half and only four in the second half. That is their game plan. We got a little winded and they want you to get winded. I like that we didn't just lay down. We allowed them to score 100 points but at least we got up to 95. It shows that we can be who we know we can be."
