Georgia Southern men's tennis ran its current win streak to five with a 4-1 win over South Alabama in Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt with the win, while South Alabama falls to 4-10 overall and 1-1 in the league. Georgia Southern continues Sun Belt play next week, hitting the road for a pair of matches in Virginia, starting with a match Saturday against No. 62 Old Dominion in Norfolk.
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point over the Jaguars with a 6-3 win from Aaron James Williams and Laurent Julia Calac at No. 1 singles, as well as a 6-2 win from Dimitris Paliouras and Pierre Mouesca at No. 2 singles.
The Eagles then notched the victory with three straight-set singles wins. Mouesca notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over Romeo Hadzimehmedovic at No. 4 singles, then Matthew Mitchell picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Victor Frumholz at No 6 singles. After South Alabama won at No. 5 singles, Pol del Castillo clinched the victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Harold van Raemdonck at No. 3 singles.
The win was the second this season for the Eagles over the Jaguars. Georgia Southern defeated South Alabama, 5-2, back on January 25 in an indoor court neutral-site match played on the campus of Ole Miss.
"They've built a lot of confidence since the first time we played them this season," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said of the Jaguars. "It was very early, they were still figuring themselves out and they didn't have one of their better players in the lineup. We know they're a great team, they're always near the top of the conference, so we knew we were going to have to bring it today. We're excited we got the match in, having to battle mother nature a bit, but I thought the majority of our guys were disciplined, tough and ready to go."
