On Saturday, October 19, 2024, Amy Wier Harrell Lingle passed away peacefully in Savannah, GA, surrounded by her beloved family.
Amy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bob Lingle; her mother, Chick Harrell of Lancaster, SC; two brothers, Andy Harrell (Diane) of Lancaster, SC, and Eric Harrell (Christina) of Greenville, SC; six children, Rob, Daniel (Katie), James, Charlie, Sam, and Glo; three grandchildren, Aiden, Brianna, and Xander; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Harrell of Lancaster, SC, and her grandson, Connor Lingle.
Born in Atlanta, GA, on August 13, 1957, Amy grew up in Lancaster and Greenville, SC. She graduated from Lancaster High School in 1975, where she met Bob during a choir trip to Massachusetts. Once, while attending Columbia College, Amy went door-to-door in her dorm, taking up a collection to rescue Bob from a misadventure that involved ‘barely going over the speed limit’ on I-95 in his Buick Wildcat convertible and a Darien, GA police officer who did not share Amy’s appreciation for Bob’s sense of humor. Successfully paying his speeding ticket, she and Bob would later marry on April 30, 1977.
Amy’s life was characterized by a powerful love for her family and her faith in Jesus Christ. She dedicated her life to serving others. She and Bob became foster parents in the early 1980s. While still growing their own family, they provided an abundance of love for children that needed it more than most can imagine. Her commitment extended to the Crisis Center, where she organized fundraisers and helped women and children, through offering a listening ear or dropping everything at a moment’s notice to help them seek safety. Amy was also involved in other organizations, including Walks to Emmaus and Relay for Life. She played a pivotal role in spearheading new churches and Bible studies.
Amy was dedicated to showing up and making her presence known for her children. Her enthusiastic spirit at her children's sporting events were often accompanied by the infamous ringing of her cowbell, both in encouragement and pride.
As a self-taught chef, Amy ensured no one went hungry. She shared her culinary skills generously, baking hundreds of pies for her church and hosting whimsical Strawberry Shortcake Suppers. Amy spent countless hours volunteering at local soup kitchens and was instrumental in founding the Bread of Life ministry at Brooklet Community Church.
In 2010, after a cancer diagnosis, Amy faced treatment with unwavering determination, famously telling her doctors to “throw the book at her” because she wasn’t done living. Following her remission, she remained a vibrant force in her community, her resilience was one-of-a-kind. Amy raised numerous animals over the years including many baby goats, an aging racehorse, abandoned kittens and more. She also loved to garden, nurturing all around her with earnest compassion and a healthy sense of humor.
Amy has left an incredible mark on all those she met, ensuring her legacy of love, service and compassion will endure for generations to come. Without a doubt, Amy was proof that love is a verb.
The celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at Brooklet Community Church, with a 1:00pm visitation and 2:00pm service. The Brooklet Community Church is located at 201 Parker Ave. Brooklet, GA 30415.
