Woods fire spreads quickly on Westside road before being contained

Huge black cloud of smoke filled the air Sunday

A woods fire broke out Sunday afternoon, October 20, 2024, a few miles outside of Statesboro on Westside Road, near Edwards Wrecking Yard. The blaze quickly spread, covering over two acres before firefighters were able to bring it under control.

Bulloch County 911 dispatched both Statesboro Fire Department and Bulloch Fire Department to the scene, located in the 3000 block of Westside Road, just west of Banks Dairy Road. Thick black smoke was visible from Statesboro as the fire spread rapidly, fueled by 7 mph winds and gusts exceeding 10 mph.

The first responding fire engines called for additional resources, including more engines, firefighters, and tanker trucks to supply water. The fire, which consumed several cars at the wrecking yard, posed a serious threat to nearby structures. Fortunately, all structures were protected, thanks to the quick actions of the firefighters.

Multiple tankers from Bulloch County Fire Department worked to shuttle water to the scene, setting up a refilling station at Bulloch Academy. Georgia Forestry was also called in to assist in battling the fire.

Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies closed Westside Road for several hours as crews worked to contain and extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
