Warming shelter at First Presbyterian Church in Statesboro

Ted Wynn, Bulloch County Public Safety Director has encouraged the continuation of a last resort warming shelter on Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21, 2024 due to extremely cold temperatures continuing in Bulloch County.   First Presbyterian Church has stepped up to provide this shelter to our community.

NWS Charleston has issued a Wind Chill Advisor for Sunday morning from 1 AM to 10 AM.  

  • WHAT...Very cold wind chills expected. Wind chills ranging from 8 to 15 degrees above zero, with the coldest readings inland.
  • WHERE...Portions of southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina.
  • WHEN...From 1 AM to 10 AM EST Sunday, January 20, 2024.
  • IMPACTS...The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Low temperatures will be as cold as 18 to 25 degrees; coldest inland. Temperatures will also be below freezing for as much as 12-16 hours tonight into Sunday morning.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

First Presbyterian Church - Providing shelter again on Saturday & Sunday

Bulloch County VOAD partner, First Presbyterian Church, is opening a last resort warming shelter at the church located at 1215 Fair Road in Statesboro again on Saturday and Sunday nights at 6 PM each night.  Citizens can enter from the rear of the church.  This shelter is for Bulloch County Citizens who have no other place to go to get out of the dangerously cold temperatures.

Coats and Blankets Distributed

Fostering Bulloch Hope Chest has distributed blankets and coats to local law enforcement agencies and to the shelter for citizens who need them.  On Saturday, January 20th the shelters had distributed all of the coats, blankets, gloves and hygiene kits they had and requested more.  Volunteers from Fostering Bulloch Hope Chest stepped up and provided additional supplies.

Shelters open since Tuesday

Bulloch County VOAD partner, Pittman Park United Methodist Church, answered the call and opened a last resort warming shelter at the church, located at 1102 Fair Road in Statesboro on Tuesday and Wednesday night.  They had 2 citizens utilize the shelter on Tuesday night and 5 on Wednesday night.  

There was no shelter open on Thursday night as temperatures increased above freezing.  Bulloch County EMA moved bedding and supplies from Pittman Park to First Presbyterian on Friday.  Friday night they had 11 citizens utilize the shelter.
