Three Tree Coffee Roasters is a local coffee company whose love of specialty coffee is blended with their humanitarian efforts towards ending human trafficking.

Their crafted blend of coffee with humanitarianism extends from their company mission statement, which is to use specialty coffee to empower their farmers, end human trafficking, and engage their local community.

Recently, they are achieving success in their mission through their ongoing podcast called, "Coffee &."

"Coffee &" strives to cultivate freedom for victims of human trafficking by raising awareness amidst coffee conversations with guests.

"Coffee &" Podcast Name

"The name came about a few years back as more of a slogan, because at our company, it's about more than just serving coffee for us," stated Philip Klayman, Three Tree Coffee owner.

"We had this slogan of 'Coffee &', and it's this hanging '&' because it's meant to pull you into the conversation letting you know that it's about more than just coffee. We love coffee, but it's about so much more for us. We named our podcast after that slogan because it aligns with our podcast goal, which is to mobilize our community towards ending human trafficking by way of coffee conversations."

The topic of anti-trafficking has been important to Klayman for a while now; but especially since he and his wife met a victim of human trafficking in 2013, where the stories shared by the victim became a life-changing experience for them.

"Years ago, I began hearing conversations about human trafficking occurring more frequently," he shared. "However, it wasn't until my wife and I went to Indonesia in 2013 that we spoke with a victim of sex-trafficking. That experience gripped us and became a catalyst for us and our company moving forward. The fact that there are 20-40 million people in the world being used against their will to provide other people value is not okay. So, we want to help end human trafficking and stand up for people who are in those situations."

The "Coffee &" podcast started in August 2023 and currently has 17 podcast episodes. There are approximately three episodes released per month on Fridays (typically the 3 middle Fridays of the month), where the main topic is the anti-trafficking movement.

The podcast also invites guest hosts who are officials in the anti-trafficking space to bring different perspectives to the anti-trafficking conversation (e.g. legal perspectives, nonprofit perspectives, local perspectives, international perspectives, and more).

A few recent guests include:

  • Joey Stazzone, owner of Cafe Kreyol, a direct trade coffee importing and roasting company
  • Lucy McCray, from Freedom Story in Thailand
  • Dr. Jonathan Grubb, Associate Professor with Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia Southern University

"We try to get different perspectives on the human trafficking issue; that way our listeners can learn different ways for how we can help to end this global issue," stated Klayman.

Other podcast episodes delve into basic coffee education and at-home practices for coffee lovers. Some fun topics include 'how do you make a good cup of coffee at home?', 'where is coffee grown?', and 'how do you run a coffee shop?'.

"Podcasts are a trending medium where we saw a lot of opportunity to connect with others and grow," Klayman said. "It's a great platform for interviewing as well. Having the chance to connect and learn with people all over coffee has been a total blast. Our podcast is run through our company Three Tree Coffee, so there is definitely a full team involved. I'd like to thank Kimberly Daly and Christian Davis, as well as Cody Barnes, who has co-hosted with me on a few episodes. I'd also like to thank all of the guests and listeners to our podcast."
