Statesboro residents are filled with joyful anticipation for the third annual Community Easter event, "Easter Luau," a testament to the dedication and heart of organizer Tralayia Prince.
What began as a simple desire to provide a safe and controlled environment for local children has blossomed into a much-anticipated community celebration, set to take place this year on Easter Sunday, April 20th, from 1pm to approximately 6-7pm.
This year’s luau-themed event promises a fun-filled afternoon at a local park, a location Prince thoughtfully chose for its beauty and child-friendly amenities. Attendees can look forward to bounce houses, face painting, a cake walk, and a special touch – every child will receive a pair of shades and a lei to embrace the festive spirit.
Prince’s deep-seated passion for this initiative stems from her own personal journey. Having navigated a troubled past and losing her mother at a young age, she now channels her experiences into creating positive opportunities for children in her community. With the unwavering support of her partner Keisha Smart, her godson Bentley, and her cousin Amy, who keeps her grounded and focused, Prince is determined to make a lasting impact.
Prince’s vision has garnered significant community support, including Gena Colley, Country Wayne, the Bulloch County NAACP, the Young Democrats of Bulloch County, Brown Equity, and Matthew Houston Lovett. In addition to several sponsors, Prince is grateful for the steadfast support of Mayor Jonathan McCollar. Mayor McCollar’s past contributions, even including a fire truck visit for the children, highlight the community’s enthusiasm for this event.
Having grown over the years, this Easter celebration has become a beacon of inclusivity, with Prince emphasizing that “everyone is welcome.” Her goal is to create an environment where all members of the Statesboro community can come together comfortably with their children. Last year’s event saw a diverse turnout and featured exciting giveaways like hoverboards, scooters, and a karaoke machine. This year, Prince hopes to offer even more engaging prizes that encourage outdoor activity and play.
Looking ahead, Prince envisions incorporating reading initiatives into future events, rewarding children for their literary efforts. With the enthusiastic support of community members and a clear vision for creating a brighter future for local youth, this year’s Community Easter event is poised to be the best one yet, promising a day of joy and connection for all who attend.
