Officers have taken inmate who escaped on foot in downtown Statesboro into custody

Caleb Scott has been captured

CAPTURED: Caleb Scott has been taken into custody as of 4:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.  He was located on North Main Street in the area of Truist Bank and Winnelson Supply.  He was taken into custody without incident about an hour and half after escaping in the area where he was last scene within a few blocks of the courthouse.

According to a statement from Bulloch Sheriff's Office on Thursday morning, Scott was able to push past the deputy while being loaded onto a transport van. The deputy was unable to pursue due to the fact he also had two other inmates in custody. Patrol deputies and canine units immediately surrounded the area. A drone was deployed within a few minutes of the escape.

Once a secure perimeter was established deputies began a search of the area and located the suspect near Truist Bank, a short distance from the Judicial Annex. Scott was still in restraints when he was located. He was transported back to the Bulloch County Jail and then transferred to the Department of Corrections. Scott will be charged with felony escape.

As of 3:50 PM today, law enforcement officers continue an intense search for Caleb Scott, an escaped inmate, in downtown Statesboro. Scott, who was being held at the Bulloch County Courthouse, fled on foot at approximately 2:20 PM on Wednesday, August 24, 2024.

Caleb Scott is described as a Black male, standing about 5'8" tall and weighing around 140 lbs. At the time of his escape, Scott was wearing a black and white jail jumpsuit and is believed to have leg irons still in place. He was last seen near the Statesboro Herald building on Proctor Street, just two blocks west of the Bulloch County Courthouse.

Law enforcement has established a heavy presence in the downtown area, including the deployment of drones and K-9 patrols in their efforts to locate Scott.

Authorities are urging the public not to approach Scott if spotted and to immediately call 911 or Dispatch at 912-764-1771.

The situation remains ongoing, residents and businesses in the area are advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
