The 14th Annual Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was held at Statesboro High School on Saturday, March 29, for third and fourth-grade students from Bulloch County’s public and private elementary schools.

The academic competition brings together approximately 200 students to showcase their math skills in individual computation and team ciphering competitions, where schools can enter multiple teams.

Since its start in 2012, the tournament has encouraged the development of math skills and prepares students for future competitions like the Penny Sikes Tournament for fifth and sixth-graders and the Georgia Southern University Tournament for middle and high school students.

The Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was named for a former Statesboro High School educator whose life and career were cut tragically short when he lost his battle with cancer in 2010. Local math teachers wanted to honor his memory and the excellent example he set for team work and academic excellence by naming the tournament in his memory.

Students from Brooklet Elementary (BES), Bulloch Academy (BA), Julia P. Bryant Elementary (JPBES), Langston Chapel Elementary (LCES), Mattie Lively Elementary (MLES), Mill Creek Elementary (MCES), Nevils Elementary (NES), Portal Elementary (PES), Sallie Zetterower Elementary (SZES) and Stilson Elementary (SES) participated in the event.
