The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has granted a two-week extension for tax filing to residents in several states impacted by Hurricane Helene, including Georgia.
In Georgia, the extension applies statewide. Every resident qualifies because the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared all 159 counties disaster areas following the hurricane.
Georgians now have until May 1, 2025 to file their taxes, instead of the usual April 15 deadline. The IRS typically requires tax returns to be filed by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.
Several other states also received extensions, including Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Additionally, parts of Tennessee, Florida, and Virginia are eligible for the later deadline.
Hurricane Helene was a Category 4 storm that swept across Georgia in late September, bringing severe winds, heavy rainfall, 15–20-foot storm surges, and widespread flooding. Although Helene veered slightly from its predicted path, it left significant damage across middle Georgia, particularly in the Augusta area. The hurricane caused 220 deaths in total, including 37 in Georgia.
