Groundbreaking Statesboro to Brooklet sewer celebration January 9th

The City of Brooklet is set to break ground on its transformative $5 million “Brooklet to Statesboro” sewer project this Thursday, January 9, at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony will take place behind the John Wesley Center at 112 West Lane Street, Brooklet, GA 30415.

State and local elected officials, including Mayor Nicky Gwinnett (Brooklet), Chairman David Bennett (Bulloch County Board of Commissioners), Mayor Jonathan McCollar (Statesboro), Senator Billy Hickman, Representative Lehman Franklin, and Former Representative Jan Tankersley, will deliver remarks at the event.

This long-awaited sewer project aims to replace the community’s reliance on individual septic systems, which have strained the local septic field capacity. The new system will tie into Statesboro’s existing sewer infrastructure, offering Brooklet residents and businesses improved wastewater service while preparing for future growth over the next decade.

The City of Brooklet has enlisted Parker Engineering of Statesboro to manage the project, with Y-Delta Inc. and Shockley Plumbing handling the infrastructure installation. Construction is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete.

The Brooklet to Statesboro sewer project is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at replacing Brooklet's aging septic systems with a modern sewer system connected to Statesboro's existing infrastructure.

The project has been in development for several years, with initial funding of $2,031,000 awarded in February 2022. In November 2024, the City of Brooklet secured an additional $5,134,100 in state funding to address cost overruns caused by inflation and rising costs, bringing the total funding to over $7 million.

The project includes installing a new pump station near the scout hut and laying a main pipeline through Church Street, across Lee Street, and down Lane Street to the city's existing system. Construction is set to start in January 2025.

The Brooklet City Council approved a $7.2 million bond allocation in November 2024 to fund critical water and sewer infrastructure projects, including the Brooklet to Statesboro Sewer Project. The project is designed to accommodate the central business district, Southeast Bulloch High School, and up to 800 homes, with completion expected within two years.
