GAME PREVIEW: Eagles set to host Thundering Herd

After a week off, the Georgia Southern football team returns home for a conference matchup with Marshall on Saturday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium/Evans Family Field. Kickoff is set for 8:05 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU and streamed on the ESPN app. The game will also be available via radio on the Georgia Southern Sports Network. • Marshall leads the series with Georgia Southern 6-2. The Eagles won the first two games (1989, 1990) but the Thundering Herd have won the past six (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2022, 2023) to take the lead in the series.
• In five of the previous eight games, both teams were ranked in the I-AA Top 25 Poll, including three times when Marshall was the No. 1 team in the country.
• Marshall leads the series with the Eagles in Statesboro, 3-1, but MU has actually played five games at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. The Thundering Herd lost to Youngstown State in the 1991 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship Game played in Statesboro.
• Eight members of Eagle Nation will be inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend: Leonard Bevill (supporter), Caroline Bevillard (swimming & diving), Matt Easterday (baseball), Darryl Hopkins (football), Andreas Koth (men's tennis), Jerick McKinnon (football), Kellie Mitchell John (women's track & field) and the late Mike Sanders (supporter).
• Georgia Southern will wear a white on white combination for just the second time at home in the program's history. The other time came in 2020 against UMass when the Minutemen had issues getting their road uniforms delivered in time during COVID.

10: Gavin Stewart's 53-yard field goal at Georgia State is tied for the 10th-longest in program history. It was also the longest made kick ever by a kicker under Clay Helton at USC or Southern.
9: Punter Alex Smith has pinned nine of his 26 punts inside the 20-yard line with no touchbacks.
8: Georgia Southern is 14-3 under head coach Clay Helton when scoring eight or more points in the second quarter.
7: Seven players have caught at least 10 passes already this season: Dalen Cobb (20), Derwin Burgess Jr. (19), Josh Dallas (16), Jalen White (12), LV Bunkley-Shelton (10), Tyler Fromm (10) and OJ Arnold (10).
6: The Eagles won the first two games in the series before Marshall came back to win the next six and now leads the series 6-2, including a 3-1 lead in Statesboro.
5: Georgia Southern's kickoff defense is ranked fifth in the FBS and first in the Sun Belt Conference, allowing just an average of 10.00 yards per return.
4: Marques Watson-Trent forced his fourth career fumble in the win at Georgia State.
3: The Eagles have won the three games this year they have had fewer turnovers than their opponent.
2: Georgia Southern had two backs go over 100 yards on the ground (Jalen White - 114; OJ Arnold - 110) at Georgia State, the 84th time that's happened in program history.
1: Derwin Burgess Jr. now stands first in the school record book with 32 consecutive games with a reception, passing by Khaleb Hood's record of 31 set last year.
