What a delightful evening it was! On March 11th, 2025, the ‘Young at Heart’ Senior Program of First Baptist Church in Statesboro took its guests on a journey through the emotional depth and passionate power of opera's most captivating arias.
With 122 guests in attendance, it marked the largest turnout in over a year for the ‘Young at Heart’ program. Special guests from Southern Manor Senior Living in Statesboro were present, with one of the highlights, Edith Hutchison, soon to celebrate her 101st birthday, all arriving in operatic style in a limousine.
Upon arrival, each guest was greeted with a refreshing beverage and a ticket for a chance to win one of 12 amazing door prizes. The most coveted prize, a pair of diamond earrings donated by Bernard's Jewelry in Statesboro, was won by Leo and Sharron Sable.
A photo booth with props was provided to capture memories.
The evening kicked off with an elegant and delicious meal, followed by a captivating program. The Emcee, Dr. Jane Marrero, along with Pianist Dr. Karla Rocker, provided delightful narratives, guiding the guests through the fascinating world of opera with insightful commentary.
The atmosphere was nothing short of magical, enhanced by the impressive talent of 3 soloists, all Georgia Southern music majors:

- Joshua Davis, tenor
- Kaylee Busing, soprano
The performers showcased a stunning playlist, including several arias:
- ‘Vainement, ma bien-aimée’ from Le Roi D’ys
- ‘Quando m’en vo’ from Act II of La Bohème
- ‘Che gelida manina’ from Act I of La Bohème
- ‘Lonely House’ from Street Scene (1900-1950)
- ‘Una furtiva lagrima’ from L’Elisir d’Amore
- ‘Joy’ by Ricky Ian Gordon
Dan V. Hagen, a guest, shared, "Jane provided delightful narratives of the fascinating operatic events in the 6-8 vignettes sung by the gifted Georgia Southern singers." Other guests commented on the talented performers and success of the event, noting that the decorations were beautiful and the planning was impeccable.
The night was truly a well-executed celebration of opera, music, and community.
Dr. Marrero concluded, “Each of these pieces offers a glimpse into the inner lives of the characters they represent. Through love, longing, sorrow, and joy, they reveal the universal emotions that make opera such a timeless art form. We hope you enjoyed this journey through the human heart.”
