Breast cancer survivors paint the town pink

The third-annual Pink Out the Fountain, a collaboration between Zeta Tau Alpha Statesboro Alumnae Chapter, East Georgia Women’s Center, Statesboro Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, and Citizens Bank of the South, was held downtown at the fountain where Savannah Avenue and East Main Street converge on Monday, October 2, 2023.

This yearly event raises awareness for breast cancer and hopes to create a visual reminder for passersby to encourage friends and family members to be proactive about their health.

Alice Mathews, a member of the alumni association and the emcee for the Pink Out event, thanked the sponsors and reminded the crowd that one in eight females is diagnosed with breast cancer and men are also affected.

“This is a wonderful visible reminder so that when you have fun downtown and you see this fountain all through the month of October, be sure to be thinking about breast cancer, about reminding those that you know and love to do self-breast exams,” Mathews said.

Local breast cancer survivors were the first to pour pink dye, courtesy of the city of Statesboro, into the fountain. Onlookers cheered as pink hues filled the fountain's waters.

“It is definitely a fight that we all need to be mindful of and just doing this is a way for us to continue to show awareness within our community,” Mathews said.

Mathews reiterated the mission and purpose of ZTA’s Pink Out the Fountain: To take one in eight to none in eight. To learn more about breast cancer, please visit https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-awareness-month/.
