Lisa Akers receives prestigious Betty-Ware Wray staff award

Lisa Akers

Lisa Akers, Data Manager and Assessment Coordinator for the College of Education at Georgia Southern University, has been awarded the prestigious Betty-Ware Wray Staff Award for 2024. The award, established in 2005 in honor of former Coordinator of Student Advisement and Teacher Certification Betty-Ware Wray, recognizes a full-time College of Education staff member who demonstrates excellence in job performance and university service.

Akers was lauded for her dedication, resourcefulness, and significant contributions to the college. During the awards presentation, a nominator described Akers as a “quiet person” who often works behind the scenes, providing critical support to the college. Despite not always being in the public eye, her impact is deeply felt.

“She is the woman behind the curtain,” the nominator stated, highlighting Akers’ essential role in maintaining the data infrastructure necessary for state and national requirements. Despite many not knowing her office location (unless they need something notarized), Akers consistently provides accurate and detailed reports with impressive speed.

Akers was also recognized for her prudent use of university resources, with a lighthearted mention of her tendency to save “everything.” Beyond her technical skills, Akers is known for her willingness to help others and take on additional tasks. She is considered one of the most collegial staff members in the college.

As the second most senior staff member in the College of Education, Akers' contributions are invaluable. Her kindness and work ethic were repeatedly emphasized during the presentation, with the nominator expressing honor in presenting the award to their “colleague, friend, and walking buddy.”

The Betty-Ware Wray Staff Award celebrates staff members who promote a positive image, demonstrate outstanding initiatives, and achieve notable success in their job-related goals. Lisa Akers exemplifies these qualities and is a deserving recipient of this prestigious honor.
