The legacy of a former math teacher is living on through a math tournament named in his honor.
The 12th annual Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Statesboro High School.
The tournament is an academic competition for third and fourth-grade students who compete both individually and as part of school teams.
The Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was named for a former Statesboro High School educator whose life and career were cut tragically short when he lost his battle with cancer in 2010.
Local math teachers wanted to honor his memory and the excellent example he set for team work and academic excellence by naming the tournament in his memory.
More than 200 students from eight of Bulloch County Schools' nine elementary schools plus the community's largest private school, Bulloch Academy, participated in the competition.
Since its start in 2012, the tournament has encouraged the development of math skills and prepares students for future competitions like the Penny Sikes Tournament for fifth and sixth-graders and the Georgia Southern University Tournament for middle and high school students.
Julia P. Bryant Elementary School’s Math Department founded the tournament and organizes the event, which is open to teams from any public, private or home schools in Bulloch County.
The Bulloch County Foundation for Public Education has helped sponsor the tournament since its formation with annual innovation grants of up to $1,000.
