The Statesboro community is coming together to support one of its own, Matthew Kleinsorge, a U.S. Army veteran and devoted father of four, who is facing a life-threatening health crisis. Matthew, 38, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in September 2024 and is now in the fight of his life, undergoing intensive chemotherapy and preparing for a bone marrow transplant.
Matthew, a two-time Iraq War veteran, is known for his service to his country and his dedication to his family. He and his wife, Sara, are raising four children ranging in age from 3 to 11. The family’s world was turned upside down when Matthew was rushed to the emergency room on September 21, 2024, and diagnosed with AML, an aggressive form of leukemia. He began induction chemotherapy that same day and has since endured four months of grueling treatments, including four rounds of consolidation chemotherapy.
The next step in Matthew’s treatment plan is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, which will require him to live three hours away from his family for approximately six months. During this time, he will undergo inpatient care followed by five months of intensive outpatient treatments, monitoring, and observation.
Meanwhile, Sara will shoulder the immense responsibility of caring for their four children, managing household duties, and working to support the family—all while coping with the emotional toll of being separated from her husband during this critical time.
The financial burden of Matthew’s medical care is overwhelming. With mounting medical bills, the potential need for unpaid Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) time, and the costs associated with his transplant and recovery, the family is facing significant challenges. To help ease their burden, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to raise funds for medical expenses, travel costs, and daily living needs.
“Matthew and Sara have always been pillars of strength for their family and community,” said Anna Kleinsorge who organized the fundraiser. “Now, it’s our turn to support them. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a difference in helping them focus on Matthew’s recovery without the added stress of financial worries.”
The Statesboro community has already begun to show its support, with friends, neighbors, and strangers alike donating to the GoFundMe campaign and sharing words of encouragement. Many have expressed their admiration for Matthew’s bravery and resilience, both as a soldier and as a father battling leukemia.
For those who wish to follow Matthew’s journey, updates on his progress can be found on his Caring Bridge page, where Sara regularly posts about his treatment and the family’s experiences.
As Matthew prepares for the next phase of his treatment, the Kleinsorge family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from their community. “We are humbled by the kindness and generosity of everyone who has reached out to help,” Sara shared. “It means the world to us to know we’re not alone in this fight.”
