Big Lots to close down after 20 years in Statesboro

Big Lots, located at 13 Lester Ct C, Statesboro, announced it will soon be closing its doors.

Big Lots has officially announced plans to start “going-out-of-business” sales at all remaining locations, including the Statesboro store in the Statesboro Square Shopping Center on Northside Drive. After serving the community for more than two decades, the store will begin its final chapter with these sales, expected to start after the holiday season.

The announcement comes as part of the company’s efforts to navigate financial challenges following its bankruptcy filing in September. While Big Lots has faced significant hurdles in recent months, the Statesboro location remained open through the holiday season, continuing to be a trusted destination for shoppers looking for bargains on everything from furniture and home décor to pantry staples and seasonal goods.

Founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1967, Big Lots grew to become a household name, earning a reputation for delivering “bargains to brag about.”

In a statement released Thursday, Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn shared that the company is still working toward finding a buyer, with the goal of completing a transaction by early January. However, to protect its remaining assets, the company decided to initiate the going out of business sales in the meantime.

“We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale,” Thorn said. “While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the GOB process.”

For Statesboro residents, this news marks the end of an era. The Big Lots store on Northside Drive has been a big name for affordable shopping, offering a mix of quality and savings that kept customers coming back year after year. From last minute Christmas gifts to redecorating projects, Big Lots has been part of countless shopping memories for locals.

As the store prepares for its closing sale, customers can expect significant markdowns on a wide range of products, making this an opportunity to stock up while saying goodbye to a longtime community favorite. The store will remain open during the sales process, continuing to offer its signature bargains to loyal shoppers.

While Big Lots’ closure is a reminder of the challenges faced by retailers in today’s changing market, the company’s legacy in Statesboro won’t be forgotten. Its two-decade presence in the community is a testament to its role in providing value and reliability to customers over the years.
