The Portal community is mourning the loss of a 15 year old Portal High School student who died from injuries sustained in an ATV accident Wednesday evening. A second 12 year old Portal student is being treated at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.
Bulloch County 911 dispatched Bulloch County Sheriff's Department, Bulloch County EMS, Bulloch County Fire and GSP to the accident on Poplar Springs Church Road at 8:30 pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. The two were riding in a side by side ATV when it overturned.
When first responders and paramedics arrived on the scene they requested two medical helicopters to the scene to transport the two patients, a 15 year old male and a 12 year old male, to the trauma center in Savannah.
The two medical helicopters, Air Evac and Lifestar, responded to the scene and flew both of the crash victims to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.
Jake Futch, Bulloch County Coroner confirmed this morning that the 15 year old student succumbed to his injuries. The 12 year old remains hospitalized in Savannah, but his condition is unknown at this time.
Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is investigating the accident.
