Murals, sculptures, and installations created by a local artist team will soon be on display at the Averitt Center for the Arts.
Beginning Nov. 10, the Averitt Center for the Arts will host works by Colleen Beyer Stewart and Wesley Stewart, a local husband and wife artist team.
Now residing in Augusta, Colleen and Wesley both earned their MFAs at Georgia Southern University. Their art exhibit, entitled Somewhere in Between, will run at the center from Nov. 10 to Jan. 6.
Wesley Stewart
Wesley received a BFA from Augusta University before earning his MFA in sculpture at Georgia Southern.
His current artwork explores biomes juxtaposed with abstract shapes, traditional fine art, and street art. He is most interested in public art and how murals and sculptures can reinvent spaces.
Several of Wesley’s public art pieces are on display at the restaurants Pineapple Ink Tavern, Frog Hollow Tavern, and both Farmhaus Burgers locations.
Other public work can be seen on the University of North Georgia campus in Dahlonega and at the entrance of Beacon Station Apartments in Augusta.
Colleen Stewart
Before attending Georgia Southern University, Colleen earned her Bachelor of Arts in studio art from the University of West Georgia. She is currently a visual arts teacher at Harlem High School in Harlem, GA.
Colleen’s work is influenced by nature, botanical forms, and mark-making with her largest influence stemming from the book The Human Side of Plants by Royal Dixon.
Frazier’s Flowers is sponsoring the exhibit. The gallery will open at 5:30 p.m. with artist talks running at 6:00 p.m.
