Come one, come all and experience the local premier band competition this fall!

The Statesboro High School Band will be hosting its 45th annual East Georgia Marching Championships Band Competition on October 29th, 2022. The event will be held in the SHS football stadium and will begin promptly at 11am and go until the awards ceremony concludes at 9:30pm that evening.

There are currently 21 bands participating in the competition from around Georgia and a few from South Carolina, as well. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the event upon arrival to the band competition. Various vendors will be in attendance to supply delicious food and snacks.

And before the presentation of awards begins, the Georgia Southern University “Southern Pride” Marching Band will be performing its current show in an exhibition performance.

Statesboro High School Band Director, Lee Collins, has been band director for 10 years and is excited to kick off yet another year of marching band championship festivities.

“The East Georgia Marching Championship began back in 1972 and continues to grow in popularity and participation each year,” he said.

A band family reunion each year

Perry High School Marching Band (Perry, GA) took home the grand championship last year (2021), so they will be the band to look out for again this year. But much more present than the fierce competition and nature of the environment, is the comradery between the bands coming together from different regions. It is simply like one big family reunion when each band shows up to the competition.

"It’s just a fantastic time over and over," Collins said.

Collins would like to thank all of the Statesboro High School band boosters and Events Coordinator Jennifer Connell for being the sponsors and entities who have made the East Georgia Marching Band Championship possible.

SHS offers more than just band for the musically inclined

Furthermore, if your child attends Statesboro High School and has musical gifts or abilities, Collins encourages parents to assist their children in getting involved in the school’s musical program, as they have an extensive offering of classes and curriculum that can be taken for increased musical development.

"Alongside our normal marching and concert band offerings, Statesboro High School also offers many additional fun and unique programs that many other school music programs do not offer," Collins said. "For example, we have a guitar program and a music technology production program. So, our students have some of the greatest local resources at their fingertips to further their music education careers.”
