Libraries all over the country are encouraging citizens to sign up for library cards as part of the American Library Association Library Card Sign-up Month in September —"a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.”

The Statesboro Regional Library system participates in PINES, a statewide system that includes 105 Georgia Libraries. Initial library cards are free and are available to all residents of Georgia.

Adults must have ID and a proof of address to apply. Current proof of address may be from mail or an electronic bill. Parents or a legal guardian must show ID and proof of address to register a child. There is no minimum age for a child to receive a library card.

PINES cards may be used at any PINES library and on the online app, LIBBY, which offers ebooks and audiobooks for free.

Giveaways planned

The Statesboro Library has several giveaways this month for first time card sign ups or renewals, including a free treat coupon from Chick-fil-A, free keychain wristlets, and weekly prize drawings. The library will also host a spirit night at Rolling Monkey on September 29 from 5-9pm.

The Georgia Public Library Service is giving away a “Libraries Change Lives” t-shirt or magnet, for sharing a photo of yourself at your local library along with a sentence of how you use it, or by sharing a Georgia Public Library Service post and sentence of how you use your library. To enter, use the hashtag #galibrarieschangelives.

The American Library Association also has a give-away of a $100 Visa gift card for sharing a photo of yourself with your library card. Post a picture to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #getlibrarycarded. This promotion ends Friday, September 23 at noon.

Follow the Statesboro Library on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with promotions and events all September.
