City of Statesboro and Bulloch County Sign Local State of Emergencies

Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar and Bulloch County Commission Chair Roy Thompson issued a local state of emergency Thursday in anticipation of severe weather resulting from Tropical Storm Ian. The State of Emergency expires on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 11:59 PM.

These local states of emergency follows the declaration of emergency from Governor Brian Kemp on Tuesday of this week.

This does not mean that conditions have changed or expected to be worse than predicted. A declaration of a local state of emergency provides the framework for coordination between local, state and federal agencies. The declarations also authorizes the city and county to take extraordinary and immediate corrective actions for the protection of the welfare of its citizens.

The local states of emergency is a procedural process that clears the way for rapid deployment of resources at every level of government.

They also address:

  • Prohibition against overcharging for goods, materials, services and housing during a State of Emergency
  • Registration of building and repair services during a State of Emergency
  • Suspension of portions of the code of ordinances and other formalities during a State of Emergency
  • Allows the imposition of curfews during times of the emergency or disaster if needed.
