The Georgia Southern Planetarium is excited to announce that it has reopened for public events!

The planetarium is an immersive astronomy laboratory housed in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, within the College of Science and Mathematics. It is used to teach university courses and labs daily and as an independent study planetarium course for university students.

In addition, it offers full-dome presentations to private and field trip groups and now, once again, to the public.

Visit the Dark Side of the Moon

This fall, the planetarium will kick off its events season with two presentations of its always popular Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon Rock Show on Thursday, September 22, and Friday, September 23.

Shows will be at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm on both days, and tickets are $4 each. It is recommended that attendees be middle school age or older. You may buy tickets online in advance here.

The planetarium is located in the Math and Physics Building, which is adjacent to the Russell Union parking lot, on the Georgia Southern Statesboro campus. The address is 65 Georgia Avenue. You may park in either the Russell Union or Hanner Fieldhouse parking lots; parking is free at the time of the show.

Arrive early to allow time to walk to the building and locate the planetarium. Follow the blue signs throughout the building.

Other upcoming shows are listed here, and the planetarium will keep this page updated as more shows are added.

About the Planetarium

The planetarium uses a Digistar 5 projection system that can immerse students and visitors into the night sky and out to the edge of the known Universe. The real-time, 3D graphics of the Digistar 5 render complex, highly-detailed models in real time and displays them on the dome.

The Digistar 5 plays full dome movies, filling the entire dome with spectacular images and videos for all ages in many topics.

Georgia Southern has self-produced shows for the Digistar 5 used in classes and presentations.

Seating

During the summer of 2012, the Planetarium installed state-of-the-art planetarium seating, replacing bleacher-style seating used until that time. The individual seating provides arm rests and adjustable back pitch angles to provide guests with a comfortable viewing angle of the dome.

The planetarium can seat up to 63 visitors with 2 ADA wheelchair spaces.  Due to fire code safety for indoor events, the staff asks that you do not bring strollers into the planetarium.

ViewSpace

The lobby of the Georgia Southern University Planetarium is equipped with ViewSpace, a streaming, multimedia presentation from the Space Telescope Science Institute. ViewSpace provides a portal with daily updates in astronomy from the Hubble Space Telescope and missions exploring our Solar System and beyond.
