Bulloch homeowner shoots unknown intruder

This is the second time in less than a week that a homeowner shot an intruder in Bulloch County

Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies and investigators responded on Thursday, September 23, 2022 at approximately 8:30pm, to the 100 block of Hopeulikit Lane in Bulloch County in reference to a man sustaining a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival Deputies found Alex Lawrence Smith, 26 on the porch area of the Hopeulikit Lane home with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Preliminary information revealed that Smith was yelling and screaming at the homeowner and began to aggressively approach him. According to statements from the investigation, Smith then pulled a firearm from his pocket and pointed it at the homeowner, who in turn fired one round from his gun, which struck Smith in his chest.

Bulloch County Deputies, first responders from Bulloch County Fire and Bulloch County EMS provided Smith emergency medical treatment at the scene. He was transported by ambulance from the scene to a helipad at the Portal Fire Station. Bulloch County Paramedics were met at the helipad by Air Evac 45 medical helicopter and transported to the regions Level One Trauma Center, Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, where he is currently in stable condition.

Smith and the homeowner are unknown to each other. This case is under active investigation and anyone having information about this incident and asked to contact Bulloch County Sheriff's Investigator Pre Cone at (912) 764-1703.
