Joy Attebery, LPN, was recently awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Attebery began her nursing career at EGRMC in February of 2019.
Joy received multiple nominations for this award. Below are excerpts of some of the kind words that were written about her.
“Joy has a very professional bedside manner. She is always smiling and has positive vibes and will do anything within her power to make sure you are comfortable and doesn't speak down to anyone. She’s the most gracious and loving nurse.”
A patient also nominated Joy. They wrote, “Joy is very attentive and is true to her name, just a joy to have around. She is very kind and makes sure I am comfortable and she gets me nutritious treats.”
“Joy Attebery is a wonderful asset to our nursing team and is a blessing to our patients,” said Marie Burdett, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at East Georgia Regional Hospital. “Joy nurses with an attentive, compassionate, caring spirit and is well-deserving of this award for extraordinary nurses."
Patients, family members and colleagues can nominate nurses for the DAISY Award. A committee at EGRMC chooses the award recipient, upon review of all nominations.
Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him as an "Extraordinary Nurse." The certificate reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people."
In addition, honorees receive a DAISY Award pin and a bouquet of daisies. They also receive a banner to hang in their respective department and freshly baked cinnamon rolls for their team. Finally, they also get a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called "A Healer’s Touch." The sculpture is hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). ITP is a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.)
The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses. The purpose is to thank them for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
"When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night," said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation. "Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human, extraordinary, compassionate work they do."
