Jill Nagel, DOT District Five Communications Officer, provided Grice Connect with an update on the Highway 67 and Nevils-Denmark Road red light construction.

Reeves Construction began making intersection improvements and set the poles for the new red light last year. The $500,000 improvement project was to be completed by the end of the year in 2021. However, construction stopped months ago. Concerned citizens reached out to ask Grice Connect to look into the reason for the delay.

According to Nagel, during the widening phase of Nevils-Denmark Road -- prior to installation of the new signals -- GA DOT discovered utility lines were in conflict with the new alignment of Nevils-Denmark Road.

The utility company had to relocate their lines to accommodate the widening. The relocation of the utility lines was completed last week.

Georgia DOT contractor Reeves Construction is expected to remobilize on site this week and continue grading then paving the widened lanes on the county roads. Once the road work is completed, the new signal lights will be hung immediately. Because the strain poles and span wire for the signals are already in place, the new signal installation should go quickly.

With ideal weather conditions and no further unforeseen issues, the signalized intersection could be activated in mid to late October. The current contract completion date is December 31, 2022.
