Opportunity arrives this semester with the return of this year's STEM Fair at Georgia Southern.

The Office of Career and Professional Development will be hosting two events next week. First will be the STEM Night in-person networking event. This event is a vessel for students and alums to learn about internships, co-ops, and employment opportunities offered at the fair.

The event will also allow attendees to connect with employers of their interests and establish a rapport with them, giving those participating a potential edge for the STEM Fair. The fair will follow the next day.

The in-person networking event will be Tuesday, August 30, from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Russell Union, with the STEM Fair the next day on Wednesday, August 31, from 11 am to 3 pm at the RAC.

About the fair

STEM represents the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The fair aims to help students who specialize in these fields find their dream jobs. Around 500-700 students and alums will attend the fair this semester, with 34 employers registered for the networking event and 138 employers attending the career fair.

Employers from across the country will gather at the STEM Fair to offer internships, jobs, or co-ops. Attendants can expect the likes of Mclean Engineering, New South Construction Supply, and even Delta Airlines to appear. While this year promises various employment opportunities, it will be up to students and alums to make a good impression if they hope to stand out and get hired.

How to prepare

The best way to prepare is to practice. That's why the Georgia Southern Office of Career and Professional Development offers online and in-person training for alums and students. In addition, the department itself offers help with refining or even creating resumes and cover letters.

While having a good resume will be crucial, communication skills are essential for interviews and networking opportunities.

According to Pamela Goodman, the Assistant Director of Employee Relations, "Employers understand the value of effective communication. It's important to show your competence in this area verbally and physically."

Students and alums can sharpen their skills by meeting with their career and internship advisors and participating in mock interviews.

Ms. Goodman advises attendants, if possible, to also be prepared to demonstrate how they've participated in experiential learning opportunities to show off how willing they are to improve to potential employers.
