The Wildlife About Our Cabins

Virginia Ann Franklin Waters introduced the program, "The Wildlife About Our Cabins" RJH DeLouch, John Burroughs and Georgia Birding. It was presented by Brent Tharpe and Diana Churchill.

Dr. Brent Tharpe is the Executive Director of the GS Museum.

Diana Churchill owns Wild Birds Unlimited in Savannah. She is also the author of "Birders Eye View" bird book and Savannah Morning News column.

Dr. RJH Delouch lived at 319 Savannah Avenue and had a long career retiring from GS in 1940. He was close friends with naturalist and essayist John Burroughs. This friendship is what most changed Dr. Delouch's life. In his time, Burroughs was one of the most respected and popular American Naturalists and Essayist in the country. His work was critical to establishing the conservation movement.

Burroughs was close friends with Walt Whitman, President Theodore Roosevelt.

Delouch socialized with Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Thomas Edison through Burroughs.

Through his relationship with Burroughs, Dr. Delouch was a founder of the Georgia Ornithological Society and was elected president in 1939. One of his major projects was to induce the public to convert their backyards to bird sanctuaries.

He did this at his home on Savannah Avenue in Statesboro.
