April is a busy month for the Exchange Club of Statesboro. It’s Child Abuse Prevention month, highlighting the club’s most important cause. Already in April, the community service organization has been raising awareness in Downtown Statesboro by turning the Triangle Park fountain water blue, handing out blue popcorn at the First Friday arts event, and decorating lamp posts with blue ribbons.

At the club’s first meeting of the month on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, the group presented Statesboro’s Sexual Assault and Child Advocacy Center, The Teal House, with a check for $6,000 to offset the cost of their new forensic medical exam equipment. They also announced plans to install a low ropes course at 7th Mile Farm for use by children in foster care.

On April 16, the club will host their annual Community Picnic on 7th Mile Farm. One of their largest events, the picnic will feature an Easter egg hunt, bounce houses, games and refreshments, all free for the public to enjoy.

Meetings for the club are held at Noon on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at Uncle Shugg’s restaurant. The club’s first meeting in April featured guest speaker Janet Swanson, Worship Pastor at Crossroads Community Church, author and creator of the One Voice podcast. Herself a child abuse survivor, Swanson exhorted members to do good and look for “opportune times,” recounting stories of when she has seen small acts of kindness make a big difference for children in need.

The club’s upcoming meeting on April 19 will feature Bikers Against Child Abuse.

Members are encouraged to bring guests to meetings as the group is finishing up a member drive that began in February. About thirty people were in attendance at the April 5 meeting with guests representing Kennedy Heating and Air, Hendley Properties, Core Credit Union, Synovus and Morris Bank. Bulloch County State Court Judge Joseph Kushner also attended as a guest of Solicitor General Catherine Findley.

In May, the club will be focusing on their Student of the Month program with a scholarship luncheon on May 3. At the luncheon the club’s annual scholarship recipient will be announced.

The club’s other activities include their Strike Out Child Abuse bowling fundraiser in the fall, school wall calendar production and t-ball team sponsorship. In addition to benefiting local abuse prevention groups, the club promotes Americanism by passing out US flags at community events.
