The Bulloch County Fire Department and Bulloch EMS were two of eight different fire and EMS departments that participated in a farm medic class this past weekend hosted by the Georgia EMS Association. (GEMA). Visiting departments included Effingham Fire Rescue, Burke County EMA, and Parris Island Fire Rescue.

This class is funded by super-speeder fines and fireworks tax proceeds.

Bulloch County Fire Department had 14 career and volunteer firefighters who participated. Bulloch County EMS who had five career and volunteer paramedics who also participated in the class. The class provided training and education in the methods of farm/rural rescue. These methods are essential for proper response and safety of the rescuer and patient.

This class was critical when agriculture is considered one of the most dangerous industries in America and often times, the first responders lack knowledge of the nature of farm machinery, chemicals and farm structures when attempting rescues.

In the photo they are performing a simulation where a rescue attempt is being made for a person trapped under an overturned tractor. Firefighters were lifting the tractor up with high lift jacks and cribbing in a coordinated effort with EMS to get them safely extricated.
