Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar and Councilmen Phil Boyum and John Riggs were sworn in for a new term serving the citizens of the City of Statesboro on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. The ceremony was held at the beginning of the regular council meeting.
This will begin Mayor McCollar's second four year term as Mayor. It is the beginning of the fourth full four year term for both councilman Boyum and Riggs. Councilman Boyum was initially elected to fulfill the remaining term of Councilman Tommy Blitch after he stepped down due to health concerns.

Bulloch County Probate Judge Lorna Deloach administered the oath of office. Mayor Jonathan McCollar's wife, Adrianne McCollar, held the family bible and assisted with his oath of office.
Councilman Phil Boyum's son, Spencer Boyum, held his family bible and assisted his dad with the oath of office.
Councilman John Rigg's dad, Sonny Riggs, held his family bible and assisted his son with the oath of office.
"I want to take this opportunity to say that it's been an honor to serve in this capacity and to be able to serve the City of Statesboro and the people of Statesboro over the past four years," said Mayor McCollar. "The past four years, we've seen a tremendous amount of progress within the city. That has been, because I believe, we have a council and a staff and a team that is dedicated to moving this community forward. But we have been living in a very unique time period. Four years ago when myself, Phil and John were sworn in, we were sworn in without a single mask in the building. Four years later, we are masked up because our nation is still dealing with the pandemic. "
Mayor McCollar went on to ask citizens to please do everything they can to keep themselves safe from COVID and the fast spreading Omicron variant.
The council also elected Councilwoman Shari Barr to serve as the Mayor Pro Tempe. She will succeed Councilwoman Paulette Chavers.
Other City Business
Council voted to accept a grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee (CJCC) in the amount of $19,500.00 for the purchase of Naloxone (Narcan).
Council voted to approve Change Order One to McLendon Enterprises, Inc. in the amount of $57,159.55 for the Blue Mile Streetscape improvements project and authorize the Mayor to execute contract document amendments. This change order addresses some stormwater improvements and a change in the size of the water line.
Council voted to award a contract to award a contract to Yancey Brothers Co. in the amount of $258,266.00 for the purchase of a replacement excavator for the Stormwater Division in the Public Works & Engineering Department using the State of Georgia Statewide Purchasing Contract.
Council voted to award a contract to Tim Lanier Construction Company in the amount of $117,146.25 and authorize the Mayor to execute contract documents for paving at the Public Works facility. This will including paving of an additional area at the facility to allow heavier equipment to be able to access that area.
