Free Drive-Thru Food Distribution Event this Saturday, Vaccinations and Masks also available

The Bulloch County branch of the NAACP is organizing two free drive-thru food distribution events this Saturday, May 1, 2021. In Statesboro, the event will be held starting at 9 a.m. at Agape Worship Center, 810 West Grady Street. In Portal, it will be held at Portal High School located at 27245 Highway 80 West starting at 9:30 a.m.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and FRESH Communities are providing 1,100 boxes of high quality food including meat, vegetables, fruit and dairy of which 300 will be distributed in Portal.

In addition to the free food distribution, the Statesboro site will be offering COVID-19 vaccinations and free masks. CORE, the Community Organized Relief Effort, will be administering 300 doses of the Moderna vaccine in conjunction with the Bulloch County Health Department, said Bulloch NAACP President Delinda Gaskins. To sign up for a vaccination time, visit Waycrossvax.coreresponse.org, click “Get started,” and follow the link for the Agape Worship Center event.

In Statesboro, participants should turn in from Johnson Street and follow the loop around to the church. This is a continuous-flow event with those just getting the food in one lane, and anyone getting the vaccine in a separate lane. Vaccines will be administered first then food will be placed in the trunk during the 15 minute waiting period. Anyone getting the vaccine on Saturday could schedule their second vaccination directly at the DPH in 28 days. A follow-up event has been tentatively planned at Agape as well to administer second doses.

“This is a joint collaboration supported by many local agencies,” said Gaskins. “We’d like to thank Xi Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, The Beta Gamma Gamma Foundation, the John Wesley Lodge #161 of Statesboro, the Truthful Lodge #375 of Portal, Portal Middle High and Agape Worship Center for making this event possible.”

This event adheres to CDC recommendations and will enforce social distancing and mask wearing. Members of Squash the Spread will be on site distributing free masks.
