OTC Scholarship Week Culminates In Virtual Celebration

The Ogeechee Technical College Foundation recently concluded a newly revamped week with the first ever OTC Foundation Virtual Scholarship Celebration.

Over 50 students were honored as scholarship recipients this year as a part of the 2020 celebration. Matthew Sawhill, President of the Ogeechee Technical College Foundation, gave remarks to students and donors about the significance of the celebration.

“This is one of those days that makes you proud to be a part of Ogeechee Tech and proud to be a part of this community. Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce, and the opportunities the donors have been able to give these well-deserving students are almost immeasurable. To the students, this is your day, congratulations on your hard work and dedication as an OTC student.”

Two students, Angela Alston and Katrina Gay, had the opportunity to share their stories as part of the virtual celebration.

“As someone who has worked for Ogeechee Tech for 20 years I would routinely encourage students who needed financial assistance to apply for scholarships through the foundation,” said Alston who is enrolled in Computer Information Systems Technology, and was awarded the Foundation Certificate Scholarship. “Recently it occurred to me that I had been watching these students come and go, but I had never taken the first step to further my education. I decided to take my own advice and apply for a scholarship through the OTC foundation.”

Gay, a recipient of one of the Auxiliary of East Georgia Regional Medical Center Scholarships, is enrolled in the Echocardiography program.

More than anything, I’ve wanted to instill in my son the belief that you can chase your dreams. So, despite my fears and doubts – I just began, and now I’m about to graduate with a degree in a career I both enjoy and can use to support my family. I want to thank the OTC foundation for making this possible and making sure dreams can become a reality.

Previously, the recognition of the scholarship recipients had happened at the scholarship luncheon held on campus.

During the introduction to the virtual celebration, Michelle Davis, VP for College Advancement, noted the significant change in the approach to this year’s celebration.

“One of the many things we have learned in the last few months is that unforeseen circumstances often open doors for opportunity. We have expanded our scholarship recognition beyond our usually planned luncheon, the virtual celebration is simply the culmination of an entire week of celebration.”

Throughout the week, students and donors were honored through OTC’s social media accounts and received personalized gifts of appreciation and gratitude. The virtual celebration concluded with remarks from OTC President, Lori Durden and a special “thank you” video from the scholarship recipients to the donors.
